RYAN GOSLING (need I say more?)

I almost did my mulitmedia project on this meme, but I couldn't think of a good joke, because the meme isn't really a joke, but rather what women want to believe Ryan Gosling would do in a relationship. I like them because I like believing they're true, and let's face it, I'm probably never going to find out whether they are or not, so I'm choosing to believe the fantasy. But I digress, the meme itself works upon the assumption that Ryan Gosling is the "it boy" of the moment, and therefore perfect in the eyes of the general straight female population. By having flattering pictures of Gosling with the text there is an emotional ploy to draw the reader in to see what he supposedly has to say. Moreover the posts start with the phrase "Hey Girl" implying that the post was written specifically for you by Gosling himself, further adding to the emotional draw.

One of my favorite ads that I pretend to hate

This is part of a campaign that Levi's did a little while back, which included a treasure hunt, which frankly I think is awesome. The ad itself is clearly geared toward young adults, and also plays on patriotism with heavy repetition of the word "pioneer". It is an obvious emotional appeal using good looking people and American ideals of adventure and outdoorsy-ness. It promotes a lifestyle rather than focusing on the product itself, implying a promise that if you dress like these people you will live like them.

We've talked about in class the latest up-and-coming meme is the "iPhone Whale", this site not only displays what's said to be the original but some inventive (and adorable) iterations. The whale is a quintessential meme in that it started out fairly simple and has evolved in creativity and setting, though it may only have a little while left to live. My personal favorite is the Free Willy poster.
